Hair Straighteners have become as common place as hair dryers and curlers. They are generally inexpensive and last for years. There are a multitude of manufactures and brands of straighteners but they in principle they all work the same. Two plates, usually made of ceramic or metal are attached to a tong which is used to press hair while sliding the plates along its length. Sleek, smooth, shiny straight hair is produced just like the celebrities. Although Jennifer Aniston probably has someone else run the straightener through her hair you can achieve the same results doing it yourself. Frizz and fly aways are also removed with a straightener and it can add body and definition too. Heat settings are important for proper results. A straightener with a range is a good idea incase fine hair is being straightened and less heat is needed.
A head of clean dry hair is required to get the most from a straightener. Unclean hair, especially with residue product can cause it too stick to the hot plates. This can damage hair or produce a crimped or jagged look. Although some straighteners are designed to work with wet hair most require dry hair. Make sure your hair is nice and dry to avoid damaging it and also to get better longer lasting results. A good quality conditioner before drying can also add to how shiny and smooth hair will look when it is straight.
If you want to add texture or create some more body, mousse, crème, or styling mud can be used before you blow dry and straighten. Use less heat when straightening if combining product in your hair.
Although a good high heat is need to straighten hair (approx 180 degrees) it can also damage or even burn hair if not done correctly. It is a good idea to start on a lower heat setting if possible and experiment a bit. If there is not variable heat setting, move the iron quickly through your hair at first to gauge results. Watch out for your neck, ears and scalp as the iron can easily burn your skin.
