Some Options For Coloring Your Hair
Sunday, 15 March 2009
It’s time to color your hair again or perhaps for the first time. There are a number of choices and but it boils down to three basic systems. Demi-permanent and semi permanent only last for a short period of time. )Semi permanent last longer than demi permanent) If this is a first time coloring, semi and demi are great ways to experiment a bit before you take the plunge with permanent. Permanent hair coloring is exactly what is says, permanent… The only way to lose it is to color your hair again or wait  until it grows out.

Whether you go with permanent or not so permanent a salon or home kit is an option. Coloring your hair at home has improved greatly over the past. The kits are much easier to use then when your mom use to do it. Home coloring kits usually require a three step process of adding color to your hair, waiting a set period of time and then rinsing, shampoo and conditioning.

Semi permanent colors only react physically with your hair and not chemically. Small particles of coloring agent enter into small cavities (cuticles) on the hair and hide there until shampoo and water slowly rinse them away over a number of washings. Hair usually returns to normal color after a few weeks of regular washes. If semi or demi permanent colors are used to cover grey they usually do not completely cover all the grey hairs but rather blends colors to make things a less noticeable. An advantage to non permanent coloring is the way it fades slowly. It does not produce contrasting root colors and looks more natural. Demi permanent lasts about 2 times as long as semi, usually about a month.

Peroxide and ammonia in permanent hair coloring allow it to chemically change the hair at a molecular level. It will not wash out since there is nothing left behind to wash away. Since it uses bleaching agents it is possible to go from a dark to light hair color using permanent dyes. This can often cause results that are unexpected since everyone has different shades of hair. It is best to test a small clip of hair to see the actual results.

Hair treated for perms or colors can react differently to semi and demi permanent colors. They sometimes can become permanent so it is a good idea to see a professional if you have treated hair and don’t want a big surprise when all is said and done.
