The Facts About Hair Products

Shampoo is important to a healthy head of hair. Make sure that you use a good quality shampoo and condition that is suited to your hair type. Styling products all dry out the hair, so starting with as much moisture as possible is important.

To add body and some texture, an excellent product is a mousse or a root volumizer. These products will not weigh down the hair, and are used to create body. Mousse is generally applied over the entire length of the hair and is usually a foam type product. Root volumizer is a liquid or spritz that is applied directly to the root area to strengthen the hair at the base. A round brush is then used to add volume while blow-drying the hair.

For a more significant hold gels can be used. These products are thicker and tend to give a more structured look to the hair. They can be used with dry or damp hair to create a sleek and polished look, or used with damp hair for general styling prior to blow-drying. Gels may be formulated for different hair colors to enhance natural highlights and tones.

For the most elaborate or firm hold the main products are pomades, crèmes, molding pastes and fiber gums. These are usually applied when the hair is just damp or completely dried, and are essential to give the spiked or tussled appearance. They are usually finger combed through the hair to give definition or to pull hair into place. Moisturizers and conditioners are part of these products and work to help your hair look healthy and stay healthy. Pomades are often used most specifically with shorter hairstyles and are very effective in elaborate styles. They are often used to define and accentuate curls or strands in longer hairstyles and updos.

To give a natural shine and beauty to your hair consider a finishing crème. These are lightweight products that enhance natural tones and colors, and are applied to the palms and then lightly glossed over the hair. Anti-frizz crèmes are a great idea if your hair tends to get fly-aways.

The last step is the light application of a good quality flexible hairspray to give a natural looking hold. The strength of the hold required will be determined by the style you are trying to accomplish.  The more elaborate the hairstyle, (such as an updo or other long style) the more hold you will most likely need with regards to your hairspray.

With the wide variety of products on the market it is no longer as difficult to complete even advanced styles right at your own home. Try experimenting with a few different products to achieve the result you are looking for. As with most beauty products less is more, so avoid over-using hair products.
